Riva is the place where the lake ends to make room for the mountains. The
scenery, which has very unique colours, is dominated by green Mediterranean
vegetation and blue water. Riva had already acquired international
tourist acclaim for these special features in the second half of the
nineteenth century, when it was rediscovered by the Central European
elite and became the holiday destination of celebrated names such as Kafka,
Nietzsche and Mann. The square and the Torre Apponale (Apponale
tower) look out onto the port where the medieval part of the city
begins with palaces, colonnades, gates and the remains of the city walls
that once surrounded Riva. Nearby, the Rocca overlooks the lake. It
was built in 1124 and today is the site of the town museum. The Ponale
Hydroelectric Station, designed by the architect Giancarlo Maroni and
inaugurated by D'Annunzio, is at the foot of Mount Rochetta; while the
Bastion, a Venetian Renaissance fortress, keeps guard just above.
