Suspended over the Sarca Valley and the "Marocche"
expanse, Drena has been a passageway between Cavedine Valley and the Garda
Trentino territory since ancient times. Its privileged position allows the
village to enjoy some Mediterranean characteristics dictated by Garda
while remaining in a typically mountainous environment. The village is
characterised by Drena Castle, first a manor, and then a
fortification used to guard the area in the direction of the Salagone
stream. The castle, perfectly restored and open to the public, belonged to
the Counts of Arco. In 1703, the French General Vendôme destroyed it
like many others in the area. Reigning over everythimg is the 27-metre high Torre
Bugnata (Ashlar Tower) dating back to the 1300's. From up top
there is a magnificent view of the "Marocche" boulder pile. Many
routes connect to this post-glacial biotope, among these Project Drena
3000, an outdoor sculpture park.
