Framed by mountains and carefully laid out in a half moon shape around
the castle, Arco enjoys the mild climate of Lake Garda without
the discomforts caused by excessive wind or humidity. Its fame as a natural
clinic, visible in the luxuriant gardens of coexisting Alpine,
Mediterranean and sub-tropical plants, was the basis of transformation that
Arco underwent during the Austrian domination. It was in this period that
Arco became a health resort and a place of therapy - "Kurort"
- for the Central European society of the "belle époque". Still
today, Arco - with its imperial villas, gardens, and pleasant scenery made
up of gentle hills covered with olive trees- preserves the environment that
fascinated Archduke Albert of Hapsburg, exiled King Franceso II of
Borbone and other European guests. A visit to Arco is not complete without
seeing the castle, the Parco Arciducale (Archducal Park), the Renaissance
Chiesa Collegiale (Collegial Church), the Casino and the palaces
of the Arco Counts.
