The itinerary of the month leads to Monte Brione, a place of rare beauty
and today a natural biotope. It is located on the flat area between Riva del
Garda and Torbole. It is characterised by overhanging rock walls and a
breathtaking view of Lake Garda. Along the itinerary we suggest the
restaurant "Restel de Fer" - Via Restel de Fer, 10 - Riva del
Garda (TN) - Tel. +39 0464 553481.
Monte Brione
First a sacred place for the Celts and then a Roman settlement, Monte
Brione was an Austrian stronghold. Still today, communication trenches and
connections between posts can be seen, as well as two forts: Forte
Garda(1907-1909), which has 3 floors and 4 fortified domes, and Forte S.
Alessandro (1860-1862) at the peak of the mountain. Fossils can be found
here. The road opposite Forte S. Niccolò, which is on the port of the same
name in the far east of Riva del Garda, leads to the 378 m summit. Openings
from old Austrian blockhouses can be found along the climb. Be cautious if
you enter: the caverns are not always safe - bring a flashlight with you.
Things to see in the vicinity: the antique sandstone quarries and the olive
grove that has been active since 1300. At the end of your visit try the
restaurant "Restel de Fer". This restaurant offers high quality
cuisine and a well-stocked cellar of selected wines, all in a Fifteenth
Century atmosphere.
