Torbole

Arco | Drena | DroNago | Riva del Garda | Tenno

The picturesque appearance of the city looking onto Garda, -with the small port flanked by pointed arch porticoes, the Casa del Dazio (House of Dazio) and the narrow alleys of the historical centre- attracted numerous painters and poets of the romantic German world including Goethe. But Torbole was also witness of an extraordinary historical event during the Third Lombard War when Milan and the Republic of Venice opposed each other. The Venetians transported a fleet of 25 barges and 6 galleys across Lake Loppio to Garda in order to back the Venetian leader Gattamelata during the liberation of Brescia, which was besieged by the Milanese army. They managed to defeat the viscounts and take Riva. The view enjoyed from the medieval church of Sant'Andrea is a must-see. From this natural terrace it is possible to see almost to the end of the lake on clear days.
