Visiting Lake Garda has been steadfast since the Neolithic Age.
Perhaps this has been promoted by the fact that Garda - the biggest lake in
Italy - has a particular shape, especially if observed from the Trentino
shore: it is enclosed between two mountain chains and it is almost suprising
that its blue colour reveals itself. It was precisely this beauty that
captivated travellers from Northern Europe who were enchanted by the
brightness, reflections and colours of the water. In other words, they
recognised the Mediterranean characteristics that make Garda Trentino
so special. It was an era defined as the Grand Tour, one in which
Garda became the destination of aristocrats, artists and, in the 1800's, a
genuine tourist spot. Dürer was one of the first to be guests of the
von Hartungen Sanatorium of Riva followed by Göethe, Corot, Nietzsche,
Rilke, the Mann brothers and Kafka.
